Chasing an Image: (De)constructions of Shah Rukh Khan´s star text
In my thesis I follow the trajectory of the current superstar of Hindi film, Shah Rukh Khan´s on-screen and off-screen biography, starting in 1990s. Of particular interest are two films of the later stage of his career: Om Shanti Om (2007, dir. Farah Khan) and Billu (2009, dir. Priyadarshan). By a textual analysis I examine the diverse elements within these films, that constitute Shah Rukh Khan´s image construction, star text negotiation, respectively. This will be considered as part of a larger conversation concerning the changing – industrial, economic and aesthetic – landscape of Hindi Film.

Proteus Politik – oder: die Kontingenz des blockbusterischen Politischen
Entgegen der landläufigen Ansicht, bei Hollywoodblockbustern handle es sich um dumpfe Erzeugnisse der Massenkultur die es tunlichst vermeiden würden politische und/oder (sozial-)kritische Sujets zu beinhalten, geht die Arbeit davon aus, es ließe sich ein breites Spektrum an politischen Inhalten innerhalb dieser Filme finden. Neben der Politik als weitgehend normierte Erscheinungsform beinhalten Blockbuster politische Phänomene die als kontingent – also weder als notwendig noch als unmöglich – zu verstehen sind. Um diesen nachzuspüren wird abseits typischer film- und politikwissenschaftlicher Positionen mit Theoretikerinnen und Theoretikern gearbeitet, deren Denken eine Differenzierung zwischen der Politik und dem Politischem beinhaltet, umso blockbusterische Politik als Proteus bestimmen zu können.

Waltzing on Broadway: Cultural Transfer in Silent Film Sound between Vienna and New York
This study deals with audiovisual performance practices in silent film exhibition focusing on two cultural hubs of the early 20th century: Vienna and New York City. By comparing various aspects of the locally-determined silent film music traditions, I draw attention on the specific problems and solutions that shaped local film exhibition industries in the respective cities.
